Here is the ray tracing in reverse, it also focuses on a stationary plane. Still find that amazing. It looks like three mechanical degress of freedom is the minumum, it did not work as well with only two.

Below, we adjust the miOPM to the refractive index (bead sample, cleared tissue). We also derive the AIRR theory mathematically.
