So… my late 80s/early 90s RPG ground was also my Warhammer 40k group so and we were all weird little rural Bedfordshire ferals so not above leaning into ethically questional fictional bloodshed... And still we were sort of aware of D&Ds embrace of orc genocide as iffy. (from DIE loaded 10)

As @bonsnots.bsky.social points out in a QT, this is one of the reasons that endless prequels & expanded universe projects are total booty cheeks. Most often, they take some aside that made the world feel bigger than the story, & crystallise a hundred possibilities into one explicit canon.
