And I should say - I agree completely with almost everything @bennewmark.bsky.social says so eloquently here and indeed he’s making the same point - artificial struggle doesn’t help as much as experiencing, or at least noticing, real struggles and there is plenty of that to be done if we but look.

Oh completely - there’s all sorts of analogies and empathy that can be drawn from that sort of experience (I almost posted something after the last time I climbed a hill with my kids - may yet!). I’m all for spotting and encouraging such opportunities.

Having a pupil in Y7 who asks questions has saved the whole class from multiple misconceptions that I just wouldn't have spotted until too late. And I consider myself supposedly "good" at thinking things through from the learner's perspective!

Moral of the story: if your school is rubbish, look for work in a different one. Especially if you happen to teach a shortage subject and are in high demand!
