The word "proxy" has become a catch-all reason to license a refusal to look at the reasons people have for doing what they are doing, by casting them as merely the agents for somebody else. Ukraine as a supposed proxy for NATO, Houthis for Iran, French lycéens for LFI. It is all so lazy and enraging

The oft-cited claim that October 7, 2023 was the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust ignores the fact more Jews died in the Argentine military junta's Dirty War, due in part to the link between Jews and leftism. But accepting that would lead to a very different narrative of Jewish history.
