@francescodb.bsky.socialExcited to share our latest preprint! 🧫 We move beyond observing bacterial Voronoi patterns to actively controlling gaps, anti-gaps, curved boundaries, asymmetric structures, seedless regions, and complex composites. @dmf-unil.bsky.social @fbm-unil.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Show Post17/ They pair structural imaging of the grains with culture-based and sequencing surveys of who's there, then use flow cytometry and cell sorting to follow community dynamics. Tracking grain growth in space and time, they find an emergent multicellular growth function.
Show Post11/ The mechanism is beautiful. Red and green fused with the yeast's native 2µ plasmid into a single replicon, and both lines independently knocked out FLP1, the recombinase that would otherwise cut the chimera back apart. Restore Flp1 and heredity collapses.
Show Post9/ This next one is super cool. How do unrelated replicators fuse into one heritable unit? Hernandez-Beltran, McConnell, Rogers & Rainey built one from scratch: red and green plasmids in yeast, with selection for yellow cells carrying both.
