Every time. So, the work of Design includes intervening in systems to change incentive structures so that it's harder to make number go up by harming more than helping. But that is the most annoying, protracted, least well-compensated (if at all) work for any designer to participate in.

design is supposed to be a humanist practice. you design things to communicate to humans, to solve problems for humans, to create beauty for humans. If those things conflict with the business goal of making Line Go Up, those practices will lose to things that make line go up.

A really uncomfortably topic professionally is that we are on the other side of a design bubble. Design Thinking didn't do the thing. A tremendous amount of dogmatic, uncritical thinking was happening, convincing workers that "design" was critical to "business success" without defining those terms.
