It's also very heavy on the sequence-breaking through knowledge. There's so many hidden little passages that can bypass areas that would otherwise need consumable keys. Letting you hoard keys to get into areas you'd be pressed for resources for otherwise. The story goes places I wasn't expecting.

And while I'm shouting out underrated/unknown metroidy things... The Good Old Days is a VERY creative reimagining of The Goonies (yes, based on the movie) with a structure like nothing I've ever seen. A gradually expanding loop where the world grows bigger and more complex as the story is retold.
