It depends. There's Doctor as academic title, and medical doctor as profession + qualification (which are legally protected). You also have eg engineer vs chartered engineer. The 2nd means that you're a member of relevant professional org. "Engineer" isn't protected as a term in the UK. Doctor is.

So you can have an engineering PhD, can call yourself doctor but not "a" doctor, and may (chartered engineer) or may not (engineer) be a member of your professional org... So having barrister/solicitor split in legal profession is simple!

The last 10 years have taught us through visceral experience, it's that decency and character comprise the baseline standard we can't compromise. Arguably more important than ideology since kind and just people will have mostly the same objectives for society, even if they disagree on execution.
