BJP as a credible national party emerged on twin issues in the early 90s- Mandal realigned the electorate against caste-based affirmative action policies in education making BJP a dominant force among upper castes, & Mandir- the issue of a Ram temple that led to a religious realignment

so the BJP/Trump relationship is slightly more complex - the BJP have made it a point to create stronger ties to the US but the godi media (the indian term for pro-media) basically continues the longstanding indian skepticism of US foreign policy, but right-wing populist coded instead
