It is not in fact our generation’s job to be the last group of physicists who know how to do things, you fucking dodos. We don’t just hire students to make our research go. We hire them to pass on knowledge and secure humanity’s ancestral inheritance.

More broadly I’ve heard a variety of comments from physicists (not the blogger) that are along the lines of: “we don’t even need students anymore” and “what’s the point of hiring students anymore” and it’s really hard not to reply “it’s our job to train the next generation you stupid, selfish fuck”

The epistemic double standard is clear: white men are hailed as heroes for taking up this tool that is built through thieving (It’s never just trained on your voice! Anthropic, Claude’s maker, stole my book and many others!) & Black people are under suspicion of not being capable of doing without it

I am sympathetic to the argument about time crunch. All the incentives in academia right now are built around extracting more from faculty (especially contingent faculty) for the same or less money with fewer resources to support us. But: The people who made Claude helped create those conditions.

The colleague’s argument for developing this toolkit in the first place is that he wants to respond faster to ECRs who are depending on him to comment on drafts. But it seems then the argument is that we need less on our plate, not to introduce factory-style automation to mass produce.
