Crucially, alot of this sliding started with Labour in 90/00s but it most certainly gained momentum and proper branding (hostile environment) under the Tories. Labour are now perpetuating and enhancing. It is a bad time to be a minority (queer, trans, disabled, migrant etc.).

They have built on the existing Tory framework without reversal. Labour talked a good talk in opposition and let down many. Looking in particular at min.income req. for British partners. ES is of course the BIG move, but there is so much more. E.g. Article 8 changes in imm. bill are v.tory coded.
