Strongly agree. I also teach creative writing, Dartmouth, and I also tell students I’m not a cop, it’s not my job to view them w/ suspicion. But I explicitly forbid its use & talk about why; and why one should *want* to write w/out it. We talk about it, because there’s no sidestepping it now.
Show PostParodic counterpoint: I read the pieces TCW wrote about his teaching—which in fact were pieces complaining about his students—and they suggest to me that if the schools where he teaches are such that the students in his classes learn a great deal, it is because these students are very capable. 😉

Show PostOne more example of how a personalist regime they cannot conceive of a bipartisan institution to the point they would prefer to destroy it if they cannot repurpose it to their ends. See, also, much of the rest of the federal government, our military, science, higher education etc.
Show PostAlso I can’t think of 59 top cities with triumphal arches. Rome, sure. Paris’s is a tacky exception to Haussmann elegance, Berlin’s now symbolizes the end of 2 regimes. I suspect this’ll be described like London’s embarrassing Marble Arch was in 1847 — “resembling a huge sugar erection”
