Our large-scale study of phone bans just came out in Science. We randomized phone-free classrooms for 16,000+ students across 10 institutions in Odisha, India. Students deposited phones in a box at the start of each class, for a full semester.

Phones in school impair learning A randomized controlled trial (N=16,683 students) across 10 schools found that phone bans improve students’ academic achievement, with pronounced benefits for low-performing students. Students also became more supportive of such bans www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I’m grateful to the Novo Nordisk Foundation for supporting this project. The fellowship gives me the opportunity to continue exploring how ideas from mathematical infectious-disease modeling can be connected more closely to the practical needs of public health.
