@jack-cavanaugh.bsky.socialIt’s net injected. CO2 is too expensive to waste on EOR operations. It’s recovered and reinjected until it runs out. @jack-cavanaugh.bsky.social
Show PostFor all the sturm and drang, opinions and POVs, this is numerically how fast CCS injections are growing in the world. Most of the volume is a few big projects @dralaaclimate.bsky.social @jack-cavanaugh.bsky.social imperialcollegelondon.github.io/The-London-R...
Show PostAnd that’s why models “forecast” a bunch of CCS/DAC. It’s a carbon IOU the models were telling us we should work on for the hard to abate stuff, or find an alternative pathway to CCS/DAC, or do both, to make the model get to zero. Society decided not to work on it much.
Show PostMarginal carbon abatement curves were helpful in thinking about costs, but the result was disastrous for investing in innovation in the “hard to abate” sectors, because it was deemed too expensive. Those sectors are hard to abate because nobody seriously tried to abate them.
Show PostReally important nuances about CCS in Bob’s thread. Here’s the top line and uncomfortable truth: CCS didn’t delay alternatives to industrial decarbonization— the work and spending on CCS was fairly minimal in context. Society delayed alternatives to industrial decarbonization, because nobody cared.
