Bingo. I hate that 3.5% figure that gets tossed around too casually but it does shed light on how many people actually participate even in the broadest and most mobilized social movements! That close to 10% of all Iranians were protesting in 1979 is basically unique, it's a staggering level.

And I'm not even critical of that; plenty of vets went on to become antiwar activists. I'm not here to shit on Ron Kovic. But as you say, plenty of boomers had a very different experience and that's what we need to pay attention to understand change (or continuity) over time.
