The main cartographic focus of course is the hospital, which itself is touched by an artistic provenance in a deeply tragic way. For a while the edge of the city, time and the tide of humanity soon swept past the area, later leaving behind a green island in a sea of grand granite – the Meadows.

During WW2, Laura Knight served as an official war artist, and in 1946, she spent three months observing the Nuremberg war crimes trials of those awaiting their fate and those guarding them. She wrote how she wanted to give the proceedings 'space and mystery.'
