Great article, nice analogy. Made me think of another one wrt to Trump's US: in 1433, the Ming emperor abandoned the tribute fleet and destroyed all of its records, orienting policy towards a more inward, land-focused economy and defense. The beginning of the end of the Middle Kingdom's supremacy.

What's noteworthy here is that China subsidises its exports, Western countries respond with trade defence/protectionism and China's response is primarily to use an economic security lever by weaponizing a strategic dependency. Shows how hard it will be keep trade and security in different silos.
