“There was some confusion regarding what 'Sutton' meant - the town or the London borough […] The defendant told the magistrate he uses the shops in his local area; he doesn't know which borough they are in and doesn't have a smartphone so can't check a map.”

Although these discussions can seem strange at first glance, they demonstrate efforts by the court to ensure that defendants understand what is required of them. Overall, Jemma was impressed with the bench's communication, ensuring defendants didn't inadvertently "make matters worse for themselves."
