It’s an undescribed species from Lake Kyoga, known as Haplochromis sp. “Ruby Green”. The population from the satellite lake where the Ruby Greens in the hobby came from is likely extinct but the species is reportedly still common in the Kyoga system.

Its one reason I like flag fish & other plant eating fish. This tank w/dozen of my flagfish babies never has an issue with duckweed. Like black algae, its just another flag fish treat! Someone is chomping on the Amazon Sword a bit much. It outgrew my 29 gallon but seems to be doing well in the 55.

Lake Victoria cichlids are much less popular than Malawi. In part, it’s because many Malawians are colorful all the time, while colors change a lot more due to mood or social status in Vics. But in the right mood, Vics will display some of the most striking color schemes of all fishes. #fishkeeping
