it feels like a lot of people in planning world here are just really small-c conservative, and I'd really like to figure out why. It can't just be urban renewal, that was 50-60 years ago now.

They instead start it at "we're removing the parking spots, what would you like to see the space filled with?" There's a deeper thing here too where winning an election is actually viewed as permission to govern. We instead insist on asking the losers' permission to govern every step of the way.

I always think back to something I saw about how public input is done in France. The starting point isn't, for instance, "should we do remove these parking spots?", because they know that'll inevitably draw out the perpetual malcontents who'll reflexively say no to everything.
