This is why I get pissed off when anyone accuses me of being an elitist when I say young people should go to college if they can. I say that because my dad was a local lineman and contractor who did heavy physical labor for years and has had chronic back pain since his early 30s

I've got a huge soft spot for Hammett (Chandler, and MacDonald) so I do my best to avoid imposing it on the students - we're already reading a noir detective novel. Though Thin Man isn't quite a proper noir, I think I'll have to exclude it because it would be too much of me indulging my own tastes.

Silent film era was a success in my pop culture history class (the one farthest from my wheelhouse). Now I choose an early sound film from the 1930s or early 1940s, not for its artistic merit or significance but as an example of cultural and social or commercial trends/forces. What would you pick?
