A "colliery spoil tip" is what the U.S. calls a "Slag heap" or a gigantic pile of earth from a coal mine. This "colliery spoil tip" was on the side of a mountain above the village of Aberfan.

And built on top of a couple of natural springs to boot. NCB were told it was unsuitable ground, they didn't listen, one hundred and forty-four people died. Corporate greed and and negligence at its absolute worst.

I’ve never seen that photo before. It is poignant and moving beyond words. And the National Coal Board and its directors never faced any sanction. The govt took charitable funds. And there are hundreds of spoil tips in similar condition still standing.
