Telling someone to "get over" one of the most horrific times in their life is so glib and lacking in compassion. But we are living in a time when empathy is valued far less than novelty.

Whenever I write something like this that looks at AIDS history, a small minority of people will say things like "Get over it! Move on!" It's interesting to me that it's mostly those who remember it, not younger people. Anyway, to them: Nah. There's no getting over history, only getting through it.
