כבר בשנת 1897 פרסם הרופא הצרפתי, אז סטודנט לרפואה במכון פסטר, ארנסט דושן, מאמר על יחסי הגומלין בין פטריות וחיידקים. במאמר תיאר את עיכוב הגידול של חיידקי Escherichia coli על ידי הפטרייה Penicillium glaucum, אולם עבודתו לא זכתה להתייחסות ונשכחה. מיד לאחר השלמת לימודיו התגייס לצבא ולא המשיך במחקר(ויקי)
