Is it the geometry or the algebra that tells us that (a + b)/2 = a + (b – a)/2 ? [Or is this the wrong question?!]

When I was an undergraduate nearly 60 years ago, I was taught that the natural numbers were also called the counting numbers, and start from 1. I don't hold with the new fangled idea that 0 is a natural number. I'm not even sure it's a number at all. For the ancient Greeks, 1 wasn't even a number.
