Hillary was just a bad candidate. It's very difficult for a party to win 3 straight elections. It hadn't happened in the US since Reagan/Bush. Working class voters feel disenfranchised. Clinton represented a continuation of Obama's policy or a step backward to bill's. Trump offered something new.

It's still not a good analogy. Elections aren't sporting events. The voters have a direct, determinative role in the outcome of elections, and almost no role in the success of a team. That's an apples to horse apples comparison.
