I also frankly think that anyone can speak without thinking and people will sometimes advocate for entirely impractical solutions as a way of doubling down. I don't think Labour MPs are immune from that.

I also fundamentally think that responding to people's very real concerns about the new policy by saying "but my mum didn't like there being a trans person on a mixed sex ward" is fundamentally bigoted regardless

I've seen quite prominent GCs talk of terms of eliminating trans people as a thing. I don't think they mostly meant literally killing them, (more that they think with the right policies people will stop being trans) but you can see how people draw these conclusions.

Gatekeeping is often good actually quite a lot of the time and although people frequently fail or refuse to understand why it's usually at least in part a project of preserving the value of the work people are already contributing in a community or space.
