Theory: subliminal (or not) message - all trash is orange/everything broken is orange.

Or perhaps they could only find a certain number of yellow mugs and certain number of orange - and this happened. I don't think it's lighting/grading. I like attributing a point to it.

May I strongly recommend “I Saw The TV Glow”. Missed it on its UK cinema release in the summer, saw it three days ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
