If I'd been overly strict about "healthy food" with him he would likely not have recovered. He lost about 20% of his bodyweight before he bounced back.

I'm not a parent but I am a cat owner. He got real sick over Xmas to the point of not eating and it took me ages to find something he would eat, which was stuff that normally would not be good for him, but as you say, fed is better than unfed. He recovered and is back on his normal diet now.
