@porthkerrywild.bsky.socialA big surprise before I even opened the trap this morning - Elephant Hawk-moth lurking at the neck of the funnel. I don't usually see these until June - earliest garden record by exactly 4 weeks. Also an early Poplar Hawk and 5th garden record of Alder Moth. 22 species. #TeamMoth #CardiffWildlife
Show PostSome bumblebees join the dark side. Others join the light side–we like to call these Obee-Wan Kenobees🔴🔵 Ruderal bumblebees can have a distinctly different appearance. Some individuals appear dark with little/no colour variation. It is caused by an increase of the dark pigment in the hair, melanin.
Show PostA Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Ceratitis capitata) turned up in our kitchen yesterday, which was quite a surprise. Only one previous Welsh record according to iRecord / NBN Atlas. This one most likely came from Chilean grapes bought in Lidl the previous day. #CardiffWildlife @sewbrec.org.uk
Show Post🔦 Night surveys this week for the rare Blue Ground Beetle (Carabus intricatus) in the lower Neath Valley - its only known Welsh locality - with my colleague Christian Owen. Despite dry conditions, we found 16 adults across 3 sites. Always a privilege to see the UK’s largest ground beetle.
