@mrmmcguire.bsky.socialThe two parties not only have different beliefs about the issues, but sharp disagreements about which issues matter a lot and which are trivial — in theory this should open up a lot of deal making space but you need to be able to swap across the silos for it to happen.
Show PostA cross-issue deal would violate the logic of the committee system but Congress has become more leadership driven and less committee-centric without the taboo against crossing issue abating much at all.
Show PostTo me one of the big known unknowns about American politics is why doesn’t Congress make bipartisan deals across different issue areas? You can do a deal that pairs clean energy wins with fossil fuels wins or immigration restriction for amnesty but never clean energy for immigration restriction.
Show PostBack in December 2020, most Democrats voted for the bipartisan Energy Act of 2020 and then they wrote and passed the IRA on a party line basis later when they had more votes. You just do what you can when you can and then you do more stuff later if more stuff becomes possible.
Show PostWhat I don’t understand about this alternative plan is that if Democrats have a filibuster-busting trifecta in 2029 then nothing is stopping them from passing additional energy legislation then, whether or not they pass a bipartisan bill in 2026.
