Ligeance named territory consisted of lands under the king's obedience and jurisdiction. To be "within the ligeance" was to be on the king's soil. To be "outside the ligeance" was to be born beyond it. The word marked a jurisdictional boundary on the ground. It was not describing a type of loyalty.
