the new deal was also happening at a time when society was changing incredibly fast. people were still moving off the farm at rates never seen in the history of the world. the way governments were dealing with the rapidly changing proletariat was making and breaking empires.
Show PostSo first you are right. Full stop. But I think it's partly because "no big shiny things". LBJ's great society has medicaid, medicare, food stamps, major results. New Deal has stuff that was more physical, standing, and gets tied in with WW2. So TVA gets more recognition than LBJ.
Show Postit's important to resist the RETVRN impulse of a lot of progressive historiography, but at the same time let it not put us off of being even more ambitious.
Show PostI’ll be honest that definitely have a big thing for the New Deal and FDR (in addition to liking that he did successfully get America on the right side of WW2) but only learned about the racist elements of the New Deal later in life and was certainly disappointed with them.
Show PostI fully understand that racism is what animates the founding of this nation. Punishing racists by denying class conciseness is just as crazy has racist poor whites closing their pools and pulling their kids from public schools.
