There's nothing inherently wrong with homeownership or anything. But the trade-offs aren't always visible upfront. I'd prefer we make stable housing the goal, not homeownership per se. Owning can be a part of it. Renting with protections can be a part of it. Fractional ownership, too!

Don't let candidates tell you their "values." Demand budgets. What are the needs they want to spend money on. How are they planning to raise that revenue. Taxing & spending are not right/left questions. They should be bottom/up & middle/out. Too often, it's 1% vs. the rest, with the 1% winning.
