You'd be hardpressed to find any Southeast Asian who had any positive feelings for the Japanese. What I wonder is, how many have positive feelings for the pre-Japanese colonizers, if only because Imperial Japan was so bad. I know at least one Indonesian grandma who much preferred the Dutch.

I have a friend who's Grandfather had a mock execution performed on him with a sword at age 14 or so. Shockingly, he didn't forget about that incident in 1945.

There's a sense that you could write off the moral weight of the Pacific War as just a clash of Empire vs Empire outside of the Sino-Japanese war, but the colonial subjects seemed to clearly understand who the worse option was.
