Also, the first novel I ever drafted was a Palahniuk ripoff called Basic Beautiful Loser, written during a Nanowrimo in the early 2000s. No one has ever read it. A central premise of it later appeared in a Palahniuk short story, which made me perversely proud: I had learned to think like him!

A bit later, I read an interview with Palahniuk where he said his favorite writers were Denis Johnson, Raymond Carver, and Amy Hempel. So I went and read them. Soon after, I started to write. And that’s why I am who I am.

FIGHT CLUB came out 27 years ago today. I remember seeing it in the theater, then immediately going to B & N and buying the book. Came home and read it cover to cover. Went back and bought Chuck Palahniuk’s other books. I’d never really read any contemporary literary fiction!
