This was an interesting read, I recommend it. In my experience, there's another (maybe related) piece at play: a lot of people are convinced there is some inherent nobility in poverty, which leads them to value being perceived as poor and to recoil at any information counter to that status.

Shane Gillis is sorta interesting. Comics tell jokes that flop all the time, but when he flops it becomes a national debate. At every open mic night comics misread the room, but when he does it it becomes The Reason Democrats Can't Win for some people.
