Europe’s mistake in the Brexit negotiations was excessive leniency. The EU should have played hardball from the outset, making the costs of departure immediate, unmistakable and impossible to romanticise. Instead, British exceptionalism was allowed to mistake European restraint for weakness.

Banks are usually secured creditors. Most of the private equity debt is also secured. So they get paid first. The biggest losers are workers and unsecured supply chain creditors.
