Sigh...I always knew Advent would be a hard sell. Against all the currents I nevertheless argue that singing "People Look East" too soon (during the two John the Baptist Sundays) spoils not only the Advent message of judgment/repentance but also announces the arrival of the herald angels too soon.

I hope that many of you will be able to sing "Lo, he comes with clouds descending" on Advent 1. The words (Charles Wesley, no less) take us from thunderstruck awe to prostrate fear to utmost praise, glory, and rapture. It's best with the Helmsley tune.
