it's actually a little more complicated than that and varies by program. With SSDI, you can earn up to about $1500 a month and keep your benefit. With SSI, your benefit is reduced by 50% of your earnings after the first $60. SSI penalizes unearned income, ie inheritance or a gift, more harshly.
