Little known fact: while the credit for the U-2 recon goes to the CIA, it is largely NSA intel that triggered it (U-2 flights were not authorized easily back then!). The NSA had noted some SAM sites emission patterns in 🇨🇺 that resembled those of Soviet missile bases in Russia. SIGINT enabled IMINT!

One could argue it began when the US put missiles along the Soviet border in Turkey, provoking the USSR to put missiles in Cuba, but the most important thing about this was the resolution.

2/2 I am sad because we are ignoring the past, I am sad because we are not willing to pay the price for a democracy we defended for nearly 50 years and the barracks are neglected and run down and nothing exists to tell the story of so many young people who were on the front line defending democracy.
