"Actually the purpose is to have fun" some tabletop roleplaying groups in fact consider enjoyment to be an active detriment to the purpose for which they play games.

Corollary: no effort to escape this trap by defining tabletop RPGs semantically rather than teleogically will successfully include all activities which are customarily considered "roleplaying" or "games" while also excluding all activities which are not – and "tabletop" isn't looking too hot either.

Basically, any time you catch yourself framing an observation or criticism in terms of The Purpose of TTRPGs, you're wrong. Regardless of what you've identified, I guarantee you not only is it not the sole Purpose of TTRPGs, for many groups it's not even *amongst the principal functions* of TTRPGs.
