The model the Proton was based on, the front-wheel-drive 1984 Mitsubishi Lancer, was never a big seller in the UK due to the company having quite a small share of the 'voluntary' import quota on Japanese vehicles. Mitsubishi positioned it as a cut above rivals - the 1200GL is shown here.
