Beyond what we have all been screaming about rape culture and the domination of women and children being a feature and not a bug, I also think everyone should be paying very close attention to how the lives and biographies of people who have faced extreme adversity are increasingly picked apart.

It seems for at least some segment of the global right part of the project of imagining their own grievance has gone beyond denying that inequality exists and has rapidly become denying that the lives of people who challenge their frameworks already don’t exist. It’s dangerous.

There is much research on the gendered binds women leaders face around authority and likability and much studied on sexual violence and believability, but having to respond to something like this during a campaign is, as far as I know, new territory.

I can’t believe a woman gubernatorial candidate who was raped as a child by her stepfather and whose mother lost custody of her minor children as a result has to respond to an attack ad calling her a liar. It is, as far as the literature I know an actual unprecedented low in modern politics.
