I'd go to my local yarn shop (I have one in mind for San Francisco, the name of which I could dig up upon request) and ask if they have any books or the like which explain things starting from the beginning or very close. Good luck and have fun!

My nephew has a PhD in Biology. When he was doing his research, I would always tell him to be nice to the mice. I'm so proud of him! Scientists are the best!
