when the republicans are weak, the establishment dems will weaken themselves also so as to not win by too much. if they had future sight and knew which policies would result in a resounding victory and which would result in a nailbiter, they'd pick the nailbiter policies every time

they're not clueless or misled or anything, they are being paid to do what they are doing. "winning" for their donor class is not winning elections, it is maintaining the status quo, which means aiming for a political deadlock where no ambitious policies can be enacted
