This is WS₂ (tungsten disulfide), a 2D semiconductor only 3 atoms thick, imaged with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope at IIT Pisa. Every bright and dark spot here is an atom. We're hunting for imperfections that alter the material's electronic properties and that we can exploit to engineer them!
