One of the reasons this is so serious is the consequences of conviction are so high. If you are a lawyer, for example, being charged with stealing a Mars bar could end you career because it is an "offence of dishonesty" even though the criminal courts will just give you a slap on the wrist.
Show PostA reminder: this is worse than judge-only trials because it means for many offences you will be tried not by a Circuit Judge but 2 or 3 non-lawyer volunteers given legal advice by someone else who may have no experience of practising criminal law in the CPS or a defence firm.
