My neighbour showed me something different. 30 years of quietly refusing to be the enforcer, and understanding that the person without a ticket probably just needed to get somewhere and couldn't afford the absurd price. Who knows, it could be a poor single mother on her way to a job interview.

So I have this neighbour here in the Netherlands. A Black man, retired now. Used to be a train conductor for NS (Dutch Railways) for 30 years. We talk a lot, and one thing he always tells me with pride; is how in three decades on the job, he never once punished a traveller for not having a ticket.
