Anyway the main thing I remember from that assembly was that the guy wasn't allowed to see his wife and kids, because he went to the US and wasn't allowed back in but his family also wasn't allowed to leave, and anyway, shit was grim even 20+ years ago

In 2003 we had a Palestinian guy come and speak at our school and it was the first time I'd ever really heard anyone speak critically about Israel but islamophobia was rampant in 2003 so the teacher had to make it clear he was a CHRISTIAN Palestinian and we were therefore allowed to feel bad for him
